It never ceases to amaze me how many textiles are requisitioned by cats! They do seem to have a taste for the finer things in life and much prefer fine antique linen to sleep in.
So I have been amused to hear about Schumacher in Australia, he fell in love with a nettle and hemp sheet, rubbing his face and luxuriating in the feel of it.
This is his story;
We found Schumacher living rough under our farm house – 6 km from the nearest neighbour – he had a red collar on and it took us 3 months to catch him (although who knows how long he had been there before we saw him) – hence the name as he is so fast! When we finally became his it was on a Good Friday and we had friends visiting with a small child – we looked outside and there was the small child and the “wild” cat sitting side by side on the step. We opened the door and he walked inside, jumped on the sofa and the rest as they say is history. He was not microchipped and despite the collar did not have any identification. We tried through the council and vets but non-one knew anything about him, so as I say, we became his. That was nearly 12 years ago.
Now he has his own bench, the top has been beautifully upholstered with a French tapestry and given extra padding so that he is comfortable in his old age. Apparently the upholsterer was quite amazed that he was working for a cat!
Schumacher doesn't claw the textiles either. Isn't he wonderful?
I'm out again all weekend buying stock. I was going to have a day off on Sunday, but then a dealer friend called to say he has several boxes of linens from a house clearance for me. He has found me some fabulous things in the past so I'm off to Clermont on Sunday to collect them. The weather forecast is bright and sunny so it should be a pleasure to wander round the 'Puces' or flea market. Who needs a day off?
