What will survive of us is love xxxx

Our wonderful neighbour Georgette died in hospital yesterday afternoon. I am still at a loss for words to describe what a big hole she will leave in my life.

Below is the gist of the reading that I shall give at her funeral on Friday.

What a joy to move to France and meet our neighbour, Georgette. From the first moment she welcomed us with open arms, she took us under her wing and helped us settle in and negotiate all the things we needed to do to complete the house and start a business. She also corrected our spoken French with incredible patience and much laughter.

She had such a big heart, welcoming our friends and families and sharing hers with us. She was extremely proud of her family. She was interested in everybody and everything. Her dining table was the setting for many wonderful meals or perhaps some crepes, chestnuts or a Galette des Rois at tea time.  She always found something to celebrate

I learned a lot about living in France from Georgette, but more importantly she taught me a lot about life. She lived every day to the fullest, rarely complaining even when her health was failing. She was determined to enjoy every single minute.

I know that she will be sorely missed by everyone who knew her but I also know that she left many wonderful memories for us to treasure. It was a privilege to know her and I will always be grateful for her friendship.

My lasting memories are of the love that Georgette had for life, this village, her friends, her family and above all her Benoit.

In the end what will survive of us is love.
