The best laid plans!

Not long after my last blog post I ended up back in hospital as an emergency! Another mad ambulance ride on twisty mountain roads and finally surgery.
Not quite what I had planned, there were a few drawbacks, the books I had ordered hadn't arrived for one thing (but thanks for the recommendations) .

Also with scheduled surgery I could have had a private room paid for by my insurance, as an emergency I had to take pot luck and so found myself sharing with Louise, a lovely 90 year old lady with the sweetest smile. She had dementia and so kept me occupied with sometimes surreal conversations and her constant need to be told where she was and why. She rewarded my efforts by flirting outrageously with my husband who was completely captivated by this 'coquine'.

Once again the care was impressive, especially by the surgeon who despite working incredibly long hours, found time to come and see me the night before the op armed with colourful diagrams and a detailed explanation of what to expect. He seemed to work seven days a weeks, always finding time to reassure anxious families and often staying on the ward until late at night, then back in the operating theatre early next morning.

Apparently I didn't behave as expected, I was told afterwards that I had returned from surgery sitting upright with plenty to say for myself (so no change there). Apparently nipping down to the cafĂ© in your pyjamas  for a decent cup of coffee, as soon as you are allowed out of bed,  is frowned upon too, but it was well worth it.

I need to rest for a few weeks yet, but I am really relieved that it is all over. If things had gone to plan I would have still been waiting.

  1. Can't sing the French health service praises enough - our family seem to be one of their more frequent customers... Rest and get well soon!
