Something a bit different this week because the new seasons' oranges have arrived, very fresh, sweet and juicy. Exactly what you need for this wonderful liqueur.
It couldn't be simpler, for a litre of alcohol you need either one large or two smaller oranges, 44 coffee beans and 44 sugar lumps. Make deep slits in the oranges and pop a coffee bean in each one. The place in the jar with the sugar lumps and pour the alcohol over the top. I can buy 'alcool pour fruits' here but cheap tasteless vodka works well.
Shake occasionally and after 44 days it is ready to drink.
This is some from last year. There is some astonishing alchemy that transforms the simple ingredients into a rich amber liquid. No-one ever guesses what the ingredients are.
This year I have made it with lemons too, with plans for a chocolate version.
Santé!
