Suddenly its the 24th, eek! nearly ready.
I always dream of being a beautifully organised domestic goddess but life does get in the way!
Sales have been buoyant, with the last parcels posted this morning. I have also been out searching for new stock for you at least two days a week.
Last year I watched the real tree shed needles from the very first day, so it looked quite bald after a couple of weeks. This year I decided to fake it and found my first tree in November, another one followed quite quickly and two didn't look right so a third one completed the indoor forest effect nicely.
I asked the man who delivers our logs if he had any fallen silver birch as I quite fancied the idea of a couple of logs drilled to take candles. He insisted on a trip up the mountain in his 4 x 4, even though it is quite mild here there is deep snow higher up where his woodland is. On foot he was hard to keep up with and I was horrified when he cut a whole tree down and proceeded to load it into the trailer! What kind of candles does he think I have? I felt really guilty about it and determined not to waste any of the wood. So far there are logs under the Xmas trees, the twiggy branches in tubs outside the house and three tall pieces have been made into a sculpture! That has used up about half of it so far!
I have consoled myself with the fact that he coppices his woodland and new growth will spring from the stump.
I do love this time of year, the Winter Solstice and the slowly lengthening days. I love Christmas with its diverse and often bizarre symbolism going back to pagan times and probably before. It makes people think of each other and get together to celebrate. A lovely bright time in the short dark days.
Our local town, Ambert, has put on a really good display this year, with a Christmas fair and a skating rink in front of the church. You can enjoy it here
I hope you all have a wonderful time with friends and family. Joyeux Nöel mes amis.
